- Deltics & Other Diesels Diesel Train Recordings "For superb microphone preamps that cut out hiss from mini-disc recordings and also improve their bass response" "There is one drawback to the quality of MD recording compared to tape, and that is a loss of bass response. This appears to be due to the mic preamp built into the machine which also generates a little background hiss (noise). To get around this, I started using (in 2002) an external microphone preamp from FEL Communications. The original intention was to try and reduce background hiss - something that it does very effectively - but it had the added bonus of restoring the essential bass response needed for Deltic recording especially. Previously, I had been boosting the bass using the digital equaliser. Most professional mic preamps are cumbersome separate units that require their own batteries. This FEL. device is contained within the mic connector and needs no added power-supply. The only drawback is the risk of overloading the recording when you are at close quarters to a Deltic (irrespective of record level setting)!"
